The Wedding Murders

Commandment II : One shall not worship.

THE WEDDING MURDERS is a story of obsession, told through the lives of two men – a serial killer and a detective.  Once childhood acquaintances, Henry Sparks (Mark Houghton) worshiped Detective Prospect Jenkins (Ross Partridge) from the day he met him in the schoolyard when he was ten; now, local murders are bringing Henry closer to Prospect as they take him away from his wife Geena (Alexandra Woodward). Prospect is drawn deeper into the world of serial homosexual murders where he will learn just how far worship can go.

HENRY SPARKS is the funny-looking outcast playing alone underneath the bleacher in the school yard. Day after day, he is subjected to endless taunting and, at it’s worst, violent beatings by his class mates. It is no wonder that Henry has become reserved and socially inept. From a distance, Henry observes PROSPECT JENKINS. Not only is Prospect the most popular kid in school, he is the only boy who has never bothered Henry. One day, Prospect rescues Henry from an afternoon beating. There, Henry realizes that there is only one way to become as popular as Prospect. He must become close friends with him. Soon thereafter, Henry falls for the school-jock. On the evening of the senior graduation, Prospect finds himself on stage accepting his title as the most promising student West End High has ever produced. From the crowd, Henry observes him with jealousy, but all he can truly see are years of missed opportunities. Prospect and Henry will eventually mature their own separate ways into adulthood.

When informed that he has just made the Ottawa Police Department’s Special Investigations Division, Prospect restrains his excitement. It is that same discipline and sense of control that has made Prospect the youngest ever to make the coveted division. As observed by his wife Geena, things could not possibly be better. The pay raise will undoubtedly mean a long awaited addition to the household: a little brother or sister for their twelve year old son, Tommy. Indeed, things are following their natural course for the ambitious Prospect.

Henry’s life, on the other hand, has progressed along different lines. A small time thief and repeat offender, he has earned himself six months in a minimum security jail. The day he is set free, the headlines are covered with Prospect’s achievement. Nothing has been forgotten. Henry realizes that he must pick up where he left off on graduation night. He will make up for his childhood lack of initiative and win Prospect’s attention, regardless of the cost.

No amount of professional ambition could prepare Prospect for the high-profile serial-killings known in the headlines as The Wedding Murders. Bodies begin to turn up in and around the district. The victims, ranging from male prostitutes to school teachers, have been found with one common link: the wedding band is missing, as well as the finger it was on. As the investigation progresses, Prospect begins to realize that he is not getting closer to the killer. Instead, the killer is getting closer to him. Prospect’s obsessive determination to regain control of the case begins to take its toll on his personal and professional life.

The obsession has clearly become mutual; Henry has won Prospect’s attention... Regardless of the cost.
