Five
women of varying ages explore life, death, friendship and the many meanings
of love as they gather together for a weekend after attending the funeral
of a loved one.
The landscape almost becomes a sixth character as the women connect
-- not only with each other -- but also with Mother Nature herself.
Secrets come out, and in the end they come to appreciate the
resilient and comforting cycles both in the natural world and themselves.

Take five female friends of various generations,
bring them together for a weekend in the country to celebrate a wake
and what do you get? An earthy, vibrant, gut-wrenching, brutally honest
exchange of feeling and emotion, sexuality, love, betrayal, and secret
revelations. Lea (Kim Prangley) has been complacently married for well
over 15 years to her husband Andrew (Bashar Shbib) but has been unable
to bear children, a fact that has caused a great rift in their marriage.
When Andrew dies suddenly from cardiac arrest as a result of a wasp
sting while painting his garage, Leas friends gather around to comfort
and support her. The bonds of love and friendship grow and strengthen
as the weekend wears on, but not without a few ups and downs in between.
The word love takes on a new meaning for them all in an unexpected
ending.
Along
with Kim Prangley and Bashar Shbib, the cast includes Alexandra Woodward
as Emilie (Leas best friend), Karina Chadwick as Beata (Leas mother
figure), Joan Andrade as April (Leas best friend from high school),
and finally, Christina A. Sangster as Carmen, a young woman on the threshold
of adulthood and struggling to find her own place in the world. Bashar
Shbib and his daughter, Maļa Nadon-Chbib, play supporting roles in this
new dramatic film. An Oneira Pictures International presentation, A
MIDSUMMERS WAKE was conceived, produced and directed by Bashar Shbib.
Associate Producer was Maļa Nadon-Chbib. Tolga Kutluay was Director
of Photography and Eyad Hamam, Sound Mixer and Editor.
