A visual gastronomical feast
and educational tool. From the wheat field to the mill to the kitchens
and bakeries of the world, Bread is a mouth-watering, fast paced documentary.
Not only are the smooth, comperative cuts from
bread being hand-made to production line machine-made appetizing, but
exceptionally strong use of form and camera angles will sparkle the
tastebuds of film gourmands. Itmay be the first and last time you get
to sit down in front of an oven and watch buns rising. Bring your own
peanut butter and jelly!
This appealing catalogue begins with growing wheat and ends with buttered
bread on a dinner table. The film's subject is very photogenic and the
filmmaker creates a high level of interest by showing the variations
of bread-making from bagels to braided loaves. The loud factory sounds
contrast with the quiet of small-scale or home production, and there
are innovative time-lapse shots of dough rising and of bread baking
inside the oven. A very good montage sequence deals with the human factor
and ethnically varied people are shown measuring, mixing, kneading and
baking -- or running the machines designed to do those tasks.
This documentary is suitable for all viewers
from primary grades up, in social studies and cooking classes or for
discussions about jobs and ethnic cultures. In case of further interest

accompanies this film.
